Core Aeration

Core aeration is often used in conjunction with over-seeding. The process of core aeration is used to cut through thatch and compacted soil allowing for relief of soil compaction, increase in water drainage, aeration to lawn, reduction in thatch layers, and a recycling of nutrients for you grass.

Dethatching

Process thatch buildup (the layer of dead turfgrass tissue) from lawn to allow water and nutrients to seep down to grass roots Use front tine dethatch attachment to raise and loosen lawn thatch on all existing lawn surface Mow and process thatch by mowing dethatched lawn and mulching in place returning nutrients back into lawn for a healthier, thicker, and more lush lawn.

Slit Over-Seeding

Slit over-seeding is a common way to economically renew and rejuvenate an older or patchy lawn by providing newly seeded grass. This technique is commonly used in the spring and fall when optimal grass growing conditions are present, thus not requiring personal watering.

Pasture Rejuvenation

YPGA offers high quality pasture services which will take your tired un-productive pasture and within a single season change it to a high quality, rich forage, super productive pasture for any horse or agricultural connoisseur to be proud of.

Lawn Care Tips to Help Your Lawn Thrive.

With a little knowledge and consistent effort, you can turn your mediocre, patchy lawn into a lush, healthy oasis that boosts your home's curb appeal and provides a perfect outdoor space for relaxation and play.

WI lawns should be at a height between 3” – 4”, optimally at 3.5".

Please, don’t take for granted that your lawn mowers deck adjustment numbers are equivalent to inches, get out your handy-dandy measuring tape and measure the height of your deck to verify your actual cutting height. The manufacturer’s “3 height” may not be a measurement of three inches from the ground up to the blade. Always verify my friend, as mowing your lawn too short is the number one reason why grass becomes susceptible to pests, burn, weed issues, and other diseases. The height of your grass is directly reflected in the length of its roots. Longer roots are vital for the health of your lawn.

WI lawns should be mowed weekly, in different directions each time, & you should take varying paths.

If your lawn is growing quickly such as in spring or after a fertilization, you may need to mow it more frequently than weekly as you don’t want to cut off more than 1/3 of the length per mowing. You’ll want to go in different directions and on a different path each time to prevent thatch build up and ground compaction from the tire paths.

When mowing try to mow only when the grass is dry.

Damp happens, if it is wet, and you have to mow, go slow. Good things take time and a little finesse enjoy this time with your lawn.

If an extreme heat wave is forecasted, do not mow during the hottest times of the day.

Mow in the morning or in the evening to reduce stress to the lawn.

If we’re experiencing a drought do not mow your lawn, let it remain long.

The longer lawn length will help to shade the roots, preventing moisture loss.

Do not mow your lawn short for the final fall lawn mowing.

This is an outdated practice that does nothing to help your lawn over the winter.

Heavy Shading from trees can inhibit lawn growth.

If you have portions of your lawn that are heavily shaded please consider lift-pruning your trees or removing trees to allow better sun light penetration to reach the lawns surface.

Lawn Fertilization

Help provide your lawn with the micro and macro nutrients that it needs for its vitality with fertilization. Don’t skip this step, whether you do this task yourself, or you pay someone else to do this for you, it is a necessary step.

Core Aeration

Core Aeration provides air to the root system. Believe it or not, air is a key component that all plant life needs in the soil. This can be performed both in Spring and Fall. Core Aeration also allows for additional compostable material to enter the soil providing additional nutrients and organic matter to the soil.

Over-Seeding

If your lawn is thinning or needs a little rejuvenation, an over-seeding following a core aeration is an excellent way to introduce new seed stock to your lawn.

Remove all leaves or Mulch your leaves into your lawn.

Don’t leave your fall leaves on your lawn prior to winter. This can cause lawn die-back from leaf buildup in the Spring. Mulching your leaves into the lawn is a healthy and easy way to process the debris.

If you  are noticing that after you leaf mow/mulch you cannot see the grass underneath this is a sign you will need to also remove leaves from lawn as too much leaf material can kill off your grass.
